The yearly award is given for field trial accomplishments in Colorado during the fall and following spring events. The standings for the Colorado Dog of the Year award will be updated as results for each field trial are received

Points are awarded based on the placement received and the number of dogs defeated in "Open" stakes. The field trials must be held in the state of Colorado and must be open to all pointing breeds and handlers. Placements in amateur stakes do not receive points. The dog in each category with the most points is awarded the rotating trophy and a commemorative plaque.
